On “The Dignity of Work” – some holiday reflections from founder David Delaney Mayer

Like many, as the holidays loom, I become reflective. The holidays are a good time to revisit the core values that drive us, to set goals for the upcoming year, and to decompress and prepare for whatever is coming next. With Elemmir, this means I find myself reflecting on the hundreds of videos we have made this year. And as I do, a theme emerges that feels worth writing about: the dignity of work.

At the core of everything Elemmir does is a belief that the work we all do matters... a lot. The businesses we build, the people we hire, the communities we shape, all make up a significant percent of our time and energy. Businesses make immense impact in our lives and communities. The work we all do should be put towards building a better future for those around us, and when that is true, there is dignity in that pursuit. At Elemmir we have the privilege of telling stories about this pursuit and to share them with thousands of people. That is a privilege I am grateful for.

Elemmir’s customers are doing remarkable work. They are building infrastructure to support the real estate industry, building devices to improve patient outcomes in heart surgeries, building tools to help hospitals communicate with patients more effectively, building software to help pediatricians do their jobs more effectively. The impact our customers make in the world is staggering, and it is fascinating to play a small part in sharing this when we create videos.

And perhaps even more interesting to me: when we make case study videos, we are telling the stories of our customers’ customers, the stories of small businesses across the US building a brighter future for their families and communities. Over the past year, videos about home builders, mechanics, lawyers, school counselors, hospitals, real estate agents, have crossed my desk. And I am constantly reminded of the competence and hard work that people show daily to build successful businesses. The case studies we make are a reminder to me of the resilience of the human spirit. I learn from each of these businesses as I strive to build a community at Elemmir worth telling a story about..

After all, building a business is exceedingly difficult. Most of them fail. And the ones that succeed usually do something extraordinarily well. They have passionate people pushing things forward because they believe in something bigger than themselves. These are the stories worth telling, and I feel grateful to have the privilege to do so.

Anyways, just some thoughts as the Holiday season looms and everyone sets their OOO messages for some time in mid-January.

Do good work, and stay in touch.

-David
